Not all comments were negative, but many will blow things out of proportion.
'We want to work together to solve Canada's problems'
Vance L. Trudeau, professor of biology, University of Ottawa:
When taken out of context... all things can support unsupportable Points of View. Case in point... for every theological or evangelical preacher. Matthew 6 is the best example. Although this is the source of "The Lord's Prayer"... almost all Christians disobey the teachings of Jesus to propagate this single philosophical Point of View. In context; Jesus was expressing a single point. That is, Do NOT... ever use vain repetition (like a Mantra) to portray yourself as righteous. "If you do this, You have your reward on earth, and there will be no reward in Heaven". So, whenever you recite the "Lord's Prayer", you are opposing the single point that Jesus was trying to make. As a theological scholar, I can make a plethora of relational points regarding this argument.
When I was political I often made public statements. Just as often, the journalists quoted me 'Out of Context'. More than One person called me out on something I supposedly said. I gently explained that people will hear what they want to hear. These people said, "well, why don't you correct them?"... to this I responded simply... "it would be to none effect" Even then, in my youth, I realized that if I were to battle miscommunication... it should be something of substance. When there is battle worth waging... I will bring to the fore, all of my weapons.
In this age of "MARVEL's" Superheros, I bristle and at the same time chuckle... because I had become adept at over 8 martial arts, and even created one of my own. I know what is possible and what is exaggeration. In the same light, I had once considered myself a "SCIENTIST", now I simply say I am an enthusiast, perhaps even a scholar. No one knows better than I, how to combat opinion with facts.
I once wrote a thesis called "the Contextual Sciences". Based on the Seven Liberal Arts philosophy (a valid premise for an educated elite), the central idea was that our educated society should update the past paradigm to a more current premise for an educated elite. Based on the premise that a degree should encapsulate the basics of all sciences and collective knowledge. That is to say, every graduate should have a working knowledge of all the sciences, philosophy, anthropology, history, theology and current knowledge (and to be able to speak intelligently about all of the above).
To put this into perspective, our education system is still using the basic fundaments of a Greek Philosophy now 2,000 years past. Although it is a solid foundation... we have come a long way since, with an appropriate amount of experience in the interim.
Although my aspirations of being, or becoming a 'SCIENTIST' is long past, that is not to say that I can't speak intelligently as a journalist or a pundit. Nope, I can't say that I have a degree or that I am a "Scientist" based on the criteria that most will put forward. That being said... I am not without my faculties. The knee jerk response (of those that know little or nothing), when speaking about science is: "and who are you to comment, "Are you a scientist?" As if those that cast doubt dissension are more qualified to speak on a topic. Years of lectures, research and study does in no way qualify me to say that I am expert. That being said... it doesn't mean I don't know what I'm talking about. Any more than those that really don't have a clue, can add any more information on the topic at hand.
I am old. I am not senile. I have lived longer than most can imagine, in the most volatile and eventful time in the history of the human race. In every case I have cataloged the essentials of what it means to be a part of modern society.
JUST SAYING
